Everyoneโs skin is different, so is their skin conditions and problems. Many of us think that dark skin is stronger than light skin, thus it doesnโt suffer from any problem. Although we are privileged with a stronger skin immune system, our dark skin also suffers from some unique yet common skin problems. In this blog, we will talk about some of the most common skin problems which bother women of color of all ages.
Melisma
Melisma is the most common skin problem found in women of color. You can signify this problem by the symmetrical, brown blotches on the skin. It shows on the face, especially on the cheeks, upper lip, and forehead. Adult women between the ages of 20 to 40 are mostly affected by this skin problem. But you can also find this problem in dark color men, children, and even older adults. The exact reason behind this skin issue is not confirmed. But doctors suggest that pregnancy hormones or birth control pills can play a major role to cause melisma. Melisma is a simple and treatable skin condition. It is not painful at all. So donโt be afraid. Consult with a doctor. Simple creams and oral medicines are enough to fight this condition. Some advanced treatment may include micro-needling. But this step is for the severe condition.
Eczema
Eczema is basically a kind of rash that appears on dark skin. It looks like a dry and flaky skin that itches continuously. The color of the rashes differs within people. It may look pink, purple, or even brown. Eczema can happen to any age and in any weather. The treatment includes changes in the personal hygiene routine and consulted medicine. Try to avoid hot showers. Donโt use any soaps, shampoo, lotion, body spray, or perfume consist of fragrances. Donโt touch the affected area too much and try to wear loose fitted clothes. You might need to use prescribed creams for some time.
Acne
Acne can be seen in all ages of dark skin. But it mostly occurs during the teenage time and in between 30 to 40 years. It leaves behind stubborn dark patches and can be painful sometimes. Try to treat your acne as early as possible. It is easily curable at the beginning. Donโt try to pick the acne. Touching the acne makes the spots stronger.
Skin cancer
People of color can suffer from melanoma which is a common type of skin cancer. This kind of skin cancer is very dangerous as it appears in places where we donโt notice regularly. For example, melanoma appears mostly bottom of feet, between toes and fingers, in the nails, in the mouth, or in the genitals. As people donโt notice these skin conditions at the first stage, it often becomes threatening. So be careful about your inner body and do regular self-check-ups.
Vitiligo
This skin condition is also known as white patches. It is a big patch of white skin that can appear anywhere of the body. This skin condition is completely treatable. Protect your skin from the sun because sun exposer can worsen the situation. Dermatologists suggest different medications depending on your skin condition. Treatment can be varied by ages, environments, and longevity of the disease.
