A lady had microneedling done and is concerned about the hyperpigmentation that resulted from the treatment. She wants to know if this is permanent and if it is normal to have hyperpigmentation after microneedling.

New York oculoplastic and reconstructive surgeon Amiya Prasad, M.D. reviews her concerns in this video, explaining how hyperpigmentation after microneedling is a normal occurrence, and how darker skin tends to be more prone to hyperpigmentation and thus needs a thorough aftercare plan:

1:54 โ€” Dr. Prasad talks about what microneedling is and what it does

2:22 โ€” Dr. Prasad discusses how he performs microneedling in his practice, and how combining it with platelet-rich plasma helps with hyperpigmentation issues

3:39 โ€” The importance of aftercare therapy after dermatologic treatment in order to mitigate healing and post-inflammatory pigmentation

5:21 โ€” How darker skin naturally tends to absorb more sunlight; and Dr. Prasadโ€™s recommendation

6:02 โ€” How it is normal to have hyperpigmentation and stripes on the skin after microneedling treatment

Hi do you think a person with a history of keloid and hypertrophic scars in the body can do the prp plasma with microneedling ? Is there any chance of getting scars in the face from the micro needles ? Thanks

Do you have any advice or suggestions regarding adult acne treatment? I have tried so many products. Iโ€™m 25 years old.. it seems my skin gets worse overtime. Especially the hyperpigmentation. Maybe I need meds to cure my skin condition

Iโ€™m very prone to hyperpigmentation. If I breakout I usually get a dark spot. However only if the spot is deep enough. Little light bumps never give me any issues. However I will get darker if I peel off the top layers of skin prematurely. I was surprised to see that the .5 didnโ€™t give me any problems and Iโ€™m on my third treatment. But I also stay out of the sun. So far itโ€™s improved my skin tone. I would say if youโ€™re of African decent only go as high as the .5 to be safe. If youโ€™re lighter skinned black like me, expect your skin to look like you got a sunburn. I mean strawberry red! Donโ€™t panic itโ€™s normal and fades within a day.

    Hi Dr. Prasad,

You are truly the only educated and expert person on YouTube who talks about microneedling which I appreciate as a PhD student. I have a question that I hope you can answer. I have bought my own dermastamp with .5 mm needles. I had planned to use it on these very faint smile lines appearing from the corners of my mouth up to the corners of my nose… I'm very afraid of getting hyperpigmentation there which would look just awful. Is this a procedure I can do at home safely to avoid PIH? I was going to prep the area with Vitanin C and follow with Hyaluronic acid and tretinoin. I wear an SPF 30 sunscreen every day. Sadly, I just cannot afford professional treatments as a grad student, but I want to try to build up some collagen in this area before the lines get too bad.

    Thank you for your time.

I'm glad its not permanent. After RF micro-needling I got 2 brown spots on my face. I thought they were bruises at first but they didn't fade. Dr is now recommending a bleaching creme before 2/3 treatment and possible laser for brown spots. They said not to worry its not permanent and they can treat it.

I appreciate your professional knowledge. How do I prevent granuloma post microneedling with PRP? What should be applied immediately post procedure? Btw, my skin color is a warm beige.
