Team Dark Skin vs. Team Light Skin: Is colorism a big issue in our community?

Dr Shonna leads a powerful discussion about the impact of colorism in our community. Are we still stuck on this kind of thing? Are there those who feel that light skin is superior to dark skin?

30:29 it's still hard to build with people with white hair and weave and extentions, hating your birth hair. That too is anti blackness.

Brain-washed and suffering from 'self-hatred" and "Stockholm Syndrome". Definition: Stockholm Syndrome occurs when someone who is held against their will starts to have positive feelings toward the person (or group) who is holding them captive.

Does our blackness also means that we accept our own hair? How can very intelligent black person who knows the subconscious and deeply psychological effects of white supremacy still wear hair to look like a white woman? We must walk the talk and be the example. We must embrace all aspects of our blackness and Afrikanness.

I love the substance of the conversation, but the sister is wearing red hair – what's up with that? That is as much a signal as skin discrimination. Brainwashing is deep among Black people – 400 years of oppression and jim crow – and as big a problem in Africa, the mother land where brainwashed females are trying to bleach their skins to make themselves look lighter. But we have to deal with the hair thing as well. And I personally don't understand sisters who bleach their hair. IJS

Some blacks are very critical with everything from skin color, hairstyles whether its natural or weave/wig, the way you talk (ebonics or proper), where you shop (black owned or not), the way you dress and the list goes on & on.. You cannot make everyone happy. The best thing is to believe in yourself & do what's right for you.

Colorism (Anti Blackness) is an issue throughout the world. Dark skinned people are going to have to get a chip on their shoulders and unapologetically conquer the world otherwise they will continue being exploited and shit upon.
