The first line of daily defense against sun damage is daily use of broad-spectrum sunscreen. Even on cloudy or overcast days, UV light can strike skin and cause damage, so simply wearing sunscreen on sunny days isn’t enough.
UVA are the silent rays of the sun, you don’t feel them, but they are everywhere. Simple trips to and from your car will also leave you exposed! Even when you are indoors, you are still exposed to the sun’s rays. Though you will not get sunburn while inside, you are still open to UV rays. UVA rays can get through glass. If you doubt this, consider ‘driver’s arm.’ This is the occurrence of a person’s left arm being tanner than the right arm because the right arm is expose to sun rays coming through the window. The burning UVB rays are not getting through the glass but the skin-penetrating UVA rays are. These rays are actually are more harmful than those that cause the burn. While the average person with darker complexion has a natural SPF of 13 (which means you can stay in the sun without burning 13 times longer than a person with fairer skin), you still need to include sunscreen in your daily skin care routine for healthy skin. Sunscreens work by absorbing the harmful ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays before they can affect the skin.
