How to Get a Tan in Photoshop
Are those winter months taking a toll on your complexion? Learn how to transform pale skin into beautiful bronze in Photoshop!
Color Highlights and Shadows Separately
The real key to changing skin tone is to focus on the highlights and shadows separately. Some effects will look great over the highlights, but will be too strong on the shadows.
Learn how to use the ‘Blend if’ sliders to adjust layer visibility based on highlight and shadow.
Fine Tune Color
After coloring skin it is important to make fine adjustments to get it right. Use a ‘Selective Color’ adjustment layer and choose ‘Reds’ from the drop-down list. Using the sliders, fine tune the amount of cyan, magenta, yellow and black.

Nice tan for the hair!
Video/actual tutorial and information starts at 9:20
I'm doing everything as shown in the Video, step by step. But In the end I get to much pink/magenta in the skin tones. No matter how dark I go, I get pink and not orange/nice coffee and milk skin tone.
I'm tanning a photo of very bright (little pink) ginger hair, male from Poland. Zero tan on the picture. And although I tried many colors (the same as shown on the video and colors around them) I just keep getting pink not milk with coffee color. Can anyone help me?
Your're awesome!
When I move the underlying layer arrow all the way to theย right like he showed, my photo goes back to being exactly the way it was originally (the color burn is completely lost from the entire photo, not just theย underlying layer).ย Could anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?ย Thanks!!
Wow…Thank's! "How to Get a Tan in Photoshop" – I love your videos)
This video was so helpful! Thank you so much !! xx
Thank you
Excellent, thanks.
Itโs same workflow for gold skin tone?
Thats nice. #techmasteraftab
Amazing!
you can group all adjustments layers and mask after…not big deal…
Thanks for this tutorial! Exactly what I needed. The only thing not addressed is needing to mask the eyes to avoid the color adjustments affecting them. Also, even though it's not too obvious because of her hair color, one would need to mask the hair. I can definitely see the color shift in her hair. It just happens to work with this image. ๐
Nice tip! You saved my day!
Thank you so much!
I'm shook, didn't know how to use that fx thing before.
i love your tutorials and your smile you are my great teacher SIR!! ๐
You are a life saver, Aaron!
love it.. really helpful xoxo
do you have a tutorial on how to edit skin to look this perfect ? ๐
I see the increased skin imperfection on her shoulder. Some kind of spots. How to avoid it?
How do you make skin paler?
Aaron you're great
hwo di i only affect the skin instead of the eyes and stuff ๐
If someone or anyone is a beginner in photoshop, they will learn litte or nothing from your tutorial. As you are not very explicit. But nice job.
Thanks, your tutorials are great and always appreciated
One minor thing though, I used the mask to remove the tan from the eyes ๐
I was searching everywhere trying to figure out how to do this. I really should have know that Phlearn – the masters of Photoshop – would have exactly what I was looking for in the archives. And I was right, thanks for a great tutorial.
Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge in photoshop. . .I hope you will still continue your unselfish love and. . .sharing of your knowledge. . May the Lord bless you always and more blessing to come to you. . Have a great day. . I like you
Thank you Aaron.
Should group your adjustments, and add mask to un-tan too much in hair and eyebrows with a really good feather.
Thanks it really help me to do some edition!
you save my life!
thanks man โฅ
It looks really orange to me. I appreciate the video but how would I make a african american look?
I dont like this notion that tan isnt pale! there are different levels of tan! ppl need to stop thinking that light is pasty and pork like! she wasnt pale before either! the only reason she looked off is beause of the editiing! he didnt do it correctly!
Apart from watching your videos I see them because the way you talk is funny
would this work if your background wasn't white? what if you have something like grass or trees behind the subject?
Nice ,,,
Other question, when you do the first layer, it affects also the background of my image…. so the landscape has the influence of the orange.. i put normal not multiplier…
Question, when you move the cursor of Blending options->Underlying Layer you move half of the arrow in the left, when i try to move i move the whole arrow to the right, so i lose completely all the tan effect, how can i solve this..?
Great Tut, but I have a problem. I'm working with Photoshop Elements and I don't have a "Blending Options". How should I get around this?
"solid color" is under fill layers, not adjustment layers, in my version of PS so your instructions were confusing right from step 1.
