Dark Skinned Women in America

Dark Skinned Women in America

This video was inspired by a message a young girl sent to me about hating her complexion because of the way society made her feel. I too had similar issues growing up and this video shed light on having dark skin in America. A couple good books I read were: “The Skin I’m In” by Sharon G. Flake as well as “Don’t Play in the Sun”. Hope it helps someone.

I hate when people tell me I'm pretty to be dark. But I to have just understand the fact that they don't know any better. I have a daughter who is a light brown complexion and she says to me mama your really pretty why did keke say dark was ugly. Keke is a family member. Wow really! Most men that I date prefer darker women. I also have a friend who is light skinned but she always tells me that she wish she could be dark like me. I love being dark I would not change it for the world.

Ya know, It's a blessing to have dark skin and I envy it(but i get pretty dark in the sun). Because when you are a light skinned Black girl, it's not unique and pretty much dark skin is the hallmark of being african. You get mistakened for being mixed, and it looks plain to have light skin because everyone of different racial background can have your skin color. darkskinned black people are so unique and beautiful that I feel as if my light skin makes me an outcast to african culture.

Thank you so much for this I believe that I'm confident but hearing it from someone else is motivating. I'm a Dark Skin woman myself an I've always had a rough time with the color of my skin. I've battled myself for years on the issue of am I ugly or not. I've been called many names by the same race of people as me more so than the opposite race. I would always try lots of different things to blend in with the next but I chopped my hair back in 2011 an I've redefined myself an my state of mind.

This is real! Thank you for doing this. Whether people have been exposed to it it exists and it's our job to remind everyone that they're beautiful and it's about more than our skin. I love my skin lol… Buuut it's but the epitome of who I am…. We are 3

Growing up I was exposed to everything and I just don't get the dark skinned light skinned thing. I have 2 dark skinned friends and they are both gorgeous because they take care of themselves, not their skin color. I have asian friends, white friends, hispanic friends, some are pretty. Some maybe not so much, but I don't see the pattern with skin color having anything to do with overall appearance.

Everyone just has to realize that every race and color of people have beautiful people as well as ugly/ average looking people. Some light skinned black girls are gorgeous while some are just plain ugly, same goes for dark skinned and brown skinned girls.

Black people, we really to do so much better than this. It's 2012 and still an issue, really? I'm brown skinned ( inbetweener) and I love the summer because my skin gets darker and I admit I feel sexier. Darker peoples skin is naturally radiant and beautiful. God doesn't make mistakes and he made us different for a reason. He said that we are all good not just lighter people.

As a biracial female, I have always wanted to be darker also. I have always thought that darker skin is beautiful. America has it all messed up. The dark skinned black people want to be lighter, and the white people obviously want to be darker or else they wouldn't tan.

As a fair skinned black woman, I love this video for I am very pro black, this is a sad state of our race and the result of slavery (divide),as black women we all have similar struggles regardless of our hue.

What a trip that you did this video. I come from a family of many hues. I a darkskinned woman from a paper bag colored Mom and a dark skinned Dad of Hawaiian heritage with a brother who was half German. I lived in a predominately white neighborhood where my color was never mentioned to my face until junior high school with other blacks. Sharon the supposedly "I am Creole" light skiinned girl would say things like " that dress is pretty on you because you are dark and you need to wear brights

Love this video! I am 27 years old and I still remember being teased because of my dark skin, and sometimes it still haunts me to this day. Recently I got into an altercation with someone close to me and I confided in one of my male friends. He told me "they probably treating you like that because your dark skinned." It opened up old wounds for me. Great, great video ether way :o)

I am dark skinned like super dark skin. I am from Cameroon, i went through the same bullying in school, i was called all sorts of names, and there were times i actually wished i could change my skin tone. How sick is that? Even Africans call other Africans names for being TOO DARK. I don't think the stereotype will ever change, Men in my country will rather marry or date light skinned women.Today i am 23 and married (mixed marriage) i have never been more proud of being dark.
